🔥 About This Painting

Hel is the original oil painting created for the Hel card in my Futhark of the Shadowed Feather runic oracle deck. This is one of my most requested and talked-about works! A dramatic portrait of the Norse goddess Hel, depicted as the threshold between life and death.

She stands surrounded by whispering souls, her form split between the living and the dead. Her hel-hound, Garm, snarls at the veil’s edge, and in her hand she holds a glowing red rose, life’s ember in the darkness.

In the oracle deck, the Hel card symbolizes:

Transformation, Renewal, Endings
Hel, surrounded by souls and accompanied by her hel-hound Garm, holds a red rose symbolizing life’s continuation amidst endings. This imagery embodies the essence of the underworld, highlighting cycles of death and rebirth. The rose in the darkness shows hope and the potential for new beginnings after loss. Wearing a Hagalaz necklace, Hel reminds us that change, though disruptive, is vital for growth. This card invites you to embrace life’s transitions, find beauty and opportunity in change, and recognize the deep, transformative power of endings as gateways to new starts.

This painting is the source of that card—a major anchor artwork within the deck.

🎨 Artistic Details

    • Painted over the course of three months, totaling over 75 hours of work

    • Built with professional artist-grade oils, allowing for deep shadows, luminous highlights, and luscious glazes. Strong archival longevity

    • Detailed glazing techniques create dimension in the spectral faces, the hel-hound, and the glowing rose

    • Hel wears the Hagalaz rune necklace, representing the disruptive but necessary force of change

    • Ghostly souls emerge from the forested underworld backdrop, adding movement and atmosphere

This is one of my most sought-after pieces and has been heavily featured in previews for the oracle deck.
